DIY salt dough trees – Christmas craft week

I’m generally not a fan of baking anything unless it’s edible, but I think these salt dough tree decorations are so cute.

It’s another super simple craft, that you may well already have all the supplies for.

No need to even venture outside the house, unless you’re looking for an excuse to go to Hobbycraft of course ; )

Salt dough tree decorations

You will need:

• 1/2 cup salt
• 1/2 cup water
• 1 cup plain flour
• Rolling pin
• Cookie cutter shape
• Straw
• Paint
• Buttons
• Glue
• Ribbon

Directions:

1. Make the dough by mixing together the flour, salt and water until it forms a ball.
2. Flour a surface and roll out the dough until it’s roughly 5mm thick.
3. Cut out the shapes and using a straw poke a hole in the top of each tree.
4. Place on a plate and microwave for about 2 minutes until the dough is cooked. Alternatively place in the oven on a low heat for 2 or 3 hours (this method helps to prevent bubbling, I’m impatient though).
5. Once cooled apply 1-2 coats of white paint (or colour of your choice) to both sides of the decoration.
6. When the paint has dried, glue on a button.
7. Thread the ribbon through the holes and tie at the top.

They are all done and ready to make your tree look pretty!
