9 great places to get interior inspiration…

… that aren’t Pinterest!

Are you addicted to Pinterest? Because I know I am. It’s such a great source of inspiration. Sometimes I have to remind myself that there are actually other places to get great ideas for your home. Some that are not even on the internet (gasp). Today I thought I would share some other places that I get my interior inspiration from.

1. Rightmove

Even though I’ve no plans on moving any time soon *shudders at the thought of packing boxes* I’m still a regular browser of Rightmove. It’s fantastic for decor ideas! I use it in two ways. Firstly I look at properties similar to mine in size and layout, that have sold recently, to see how they have utilised the space. You might come up with some clever ideas that you’d never considered or a completely different layout.

Secondly I look at dream properties, (partially pretending I’ve won the lottery) but also seeking interior inspiration that could be re-created in a more affordable way. Take screenshots of your favourite looks and then search for furniture and accessories for a similar look.

2. Interior blogs

I know, obvious right?  But I thought I would let you know about a few of my favourite interior bloggers that I’m inspired by and I’m sure you will be too.

3. Magazines and catalogues

Step away from the internet my friend (finish reading this first though please). There’s nothing like curling up with a cuppa and an interior mag for company. Despite being a blogger, I’m old school like that  – I love to see things in print.

My personal favourites for interior inspiration are Ideal Home, House Beautiful and Style at Home. I love to see how people have decorated their homes and I often find great home accessories from shops that I wouldn’t know about otherwise.

I find some of the high end interior mags are too heavily weighted with advertising things I can’t afford, so I tend to skip them.

Catalogues are also great for ideas on how to style your home accessories and furniture.

4. Friends and family

If I’m ever feeling stumped about how to decorate a space, I ask my friends and family what they would do. They might come up with ideas that you hadn’t even considered. Plus, I love looking at their home’s too. Obviously, I’m not going to buy the same things, that might get a little bit awkward. But I love it when friends recommend a new store to try out.

5. Shops

I find taking a stroll around a big home store, like Ikea, is perfect for sparking the creative juices. They do all the hard work for you by creating amazing room sets, then it’s just a case of translating this to your personal style and working it in to your home. I have heaps of photos on my camera that are just perfectly styled room sets I’ve seen when out and about shopping.

6. Show homes

Who doesn’t love a good nose around a show home? Why not visit one and take a peak for some beautiful interior design ideas. Take a few sneaky snaps while no one is looking.

7. Home Exhibitions

Guess where I’ll be headed in spring? Oh yes, that’s right I’m off to the Ideal home exhibition in London. This place is a mecca for interior nuts like me and their poor bewildered husbands. There are workshops focusing on DIY and interior styling throughout the day and my personal highlight is checking out the room sets that showcase the latest decor trends.

No worries if you can’t make it. I’ll be bringing the interior inspiration to you by taking lots of lovely photos and telling you all about it right here on the blog.

8. Movies and TV shows

Have you ever noticed how people in films and TV shows have the best homes? I often miss important plot points because I am thinking ‘wow, that kitchen’ or ‘OMG how nice is that throw’. Even whilst watching The walking dead I had major home envy when they arrived at Alexandria, minus the walkers obviously.

I’ve found this great website called Hooked on houses, which has lots of lovely screen shots of homes from all your favourite films and tv show. They even have some celebrity homes on there, which are well worth a look.

9. Instagram

Hmm, I think my Instagram addiction might be even worse than my Pinterest one. When it comes to interior decor you are absolutely spoilt for choice on this social media platform. Just type in #interiors to that search bar and you’ll be in home decor heaven within seconds.

The great thing about Instagram, is that it’s very interactive. So if you see a mirror that you like in someone’s photo you can ask where it’s from.

Where do you get your interior inspiration from? Let me know in the comments.

I have a confession to make. Before doing a loft conversion in my house, I signed up with the local estate agent and pretended that I was moving house. I then went on viewings of properties in the local area that had already had a loft conversion done. I got some great ideas about window location and layout of the room. My lift conversion was great as a result of this interior inspiration. Pen x.
