21 Easter ideas for kids (budget friendly)

The Easter holidays are fast approaching and I’ll be honest, I’ve been panicking a little! After the initial empty nest blues when my son started school last September, I’ve got used to life working from home and having time to myself in between school runs. I love having my son at home during the holidays, but find it so much harder to keep him entertained now he’s used the hustle and bustle of life at school. So I turned to my default coping mechanism – making a list! A big long list of Easter ideas for kids, fun activities that won’t cost the earth and aren’t weather dependent.

The good news is that you don’t have to make a list because I’ve done it for you! All you need to do is click to download and then print it and stick it on the fridge. Every time you’re stuck for an idea, head to the list for some inspiration!

21 Easter ideas for kids

1# Go on an egg hunt

I do love an egg hunt!  What could be better than hunting for little chocolate treats? If you do happen to hide a few so well that the kids never find them, it would be rude not to eat them later that evening with a nice glass of pinot.

2# Make chocolate nests

I have such fond memories of making (ok eating) these as a child. Melt 225g chocolate and 50g butter in a pan, then add 2 tbsp of golden syrup and 75g rice crispies and stir. Pop in to cake cases and press a spoon in the middle to create a nest shape. Allow to cool and the chocolate to set. Add in mini eggs and voila!

3# Go on a spring flower walk

Take a walk around the neighbourhood and look out for daffodils, tulips and crocus.

4# Play pin the tail on the bunny

Cut a bunny shape and a tail out of paper, tape it to the wall and you’re good to go!

5# Make a bunny picture with cotton wool

What child doesn’t love a sticky picture? Grab a glue stick, some coloured paper and cotton and let them create their own fluffy bunny masterpiece.

6# Design Easter hats

You could make crowns from paper or hit up Poundland for Easter hat supplies and let them design their very own Easter hats. I love these ideas for boys Easter bonnets from netmums

7# Cut out bunny bunting

Remember when you used fold up a piece of paper concertina style and cut out a person paper chain? Well it turns out you can do that with bunnies too! Older children can fold and cut themselves and younger ones can decorate the bunnies with whatever craft materials you have to hand.

8# Go to see lambs

Head to the farm, or if you’re lucky enough to live in the countryside go for a walk to see all the spring lambs bouncing around.

9# Grow cress egg heads

Put your empty eggshell to good use! Remove the top of the eggshell and clean out the inside. Let the kids draw on a face. Dip a cotton wool ball in water and then pop it into the eggshell. Scatter in a tsp of cress seeds, place in an egg cup and put somewhere warm and sunny. It should only a take a couple of days for your little egg friend to start growing cress hair.

10# Watch a bunny movie

Somebody grab the popcorn, its movie time. Hop, Alice in wonderland, Winnie the Pooh or Bambi would be my recommendations.

11# Have an Easter egg and spoon race

A sports day at your house – with chocolate! It’s bound to be popular.

12# Make a DIY easter photobooth

Hunt around the house to find anything vaguely Easter related – bunny ears, Easter hats, egg hunt signs and have a mini photo shoot.

13# Have an Easter themed tea party

OK, this is kind of like a regular tea party, but serve Easter themed food and maybe put up some of the Easter decorations you’ve made and wear your Easter hats of course.

14# Write a letter to/draw a picture for the Easter bunny

Trick them in to practising their writing skills with a letter to the Easter bunny!

15# Have an Easter storytime afternoon

Take a walk to the library and find some Easter related books, then head home to snuggle up and read them all.

16# Splash in some puddles

It wouldn’t be the Easter holidays without some inevitable rain, so make the most of it. Slap on those welly boots and go puddle jumping.

17# Play Easter bingo

I’ve found the cutest Easter bingo set that is free to print from One Creative Mummy. It’s super easy to play and great for little ones to practice their matching skills.

18# Feed the ducks and look for ducklings

Gather up any left over bread and head for the nearest pond, with any luck you’ll spot some ducklings.

19# Make a pompom bunny garland

Have some fun making pompoms, obviously you won’t want to let them loose with a glue gun just yet, but check out the bunny DIY pompom garland tutorial here.

20# Plant seeds

If you get some sunny weather head in to the garden and plant some seeds for summer. It’s a good excuse to tidy up the garden after winter too.

21# Decorate egg shells

There are so many ways to do this, I’ve seen marble eggs, glitter eggs and painted eggs. Firstly you need to blow out your egg using one of the methods shown here, then  decide how to decorate. Check out Red Ted Art for some fantastic ideas.
